The Rhythms Conversation 2007
What can one person do?
Do you blank off the suffering of other people or does it make you despair? Sitting on the sofa on a night in, watching the news can be a depressing experience. Every night, there are pictures of individual suffering, of war and of damage to the planet that can cause a feeling of quiet desperation or sinister indifference.
In news reports life can seem cheap and disposable. Is there a route past despair and apathy to use your life in a beautiful way to make a difference to our world? Or, to put it more simply- What can one person do?
In the second of our ‘Rhythms' conversations’ we welcome John Bird, an ex-offender, who in a remarkable turnaround founded the immensely successful journal ‘The Big Issue’ and is now a candidate for the position of Mayor of London. He is joined by Ed Newell, an Oxford economic historian, and co-author of the book ‘What can one person do? In his own change of life, Ed Newell is now Canon of St Paul’s Cathedral and is in a unique position to raise ethical issues in the heart of the City of London.
